Leo's Terminal Window

Leo's Terminal Window

Not every great photo makes a great background.

Leo was customizing his MacBook Terminal for the first time. Fonts, colors, transparency—everything was new. Then he chose his own profile photo as the background.

At first, it looked fantastic.

The top half of the image was almost completely black, making the text easy to read. But the lower half was bright white.

I said nothing.

As Leo kept typing, the cursor moved downward. Eventually, his text reached the white area—and almost disappeared.

He paused.

Stared at the screen.

Then burst into a smile.

Leo had discovered the problem himself. Without anyone pointing it out, he learned that a design isn't judged by how it looks at first glance, but by how well it works in every situation.

Some lessons are best left undiscovered—until students discover them themselves. A tiny design mistake became a memorable lesson in testing, usability, and thinking ahead.
