When Coding Gets Personal

When Coding Gets Personal

A Grade 4 conversation about who owns an idea.

Back in Grade 4, twin brothers Marius and Lucas took their remote coding classes in turns. One day, Marius' computer stopped working. Their mother said, "Just use your brother's computer for now."

Marius immediately protested:

"But then won't the code I write belong to him?!" 😄

The room burst into laughter—but his question was genuine.

To Marius, code wasn't just something stored on a computer. It was his work, his thinking, his creation. Even at nine years old, he already felt a strong sense of authorship and responsibility for what he made.

One of the greatest moments in education is when children stop asking, "What should I write?" and begin asking, "Is this really mine?" That's when learning becomes creation.

This exhibit also pairs beautifully with The Stickman Who Lifted the World. Together they show two sides of creativity:

one expresses ownership ("This is my code."),
the other expresses expression ("I'll add a stickman.").

Those are two powerful milestones in becoming a creator.
