Lambert and His Walking Stickman
When button taps found the beat
Lambert, in Grade 5, built an iOS app where a stickman could walk around the screen. He added four buttons to control the movement: up, down, left, and right.
When recording a short demo, Lambert chose a piece of energetic background music. Watching it later, I realized something delightful: his button taps were naturally synchronized with the beat.
The project became more than a programming exercise. Each tap felt like part of the music, giving the simple stickman a surprising sense of rhythm and personality.
Creative programming often emerges from unexpected combinations. A few buttons, a simple animation, and a piece of music together created an experience that was far more engaging than any of them alone.
